Interfaith Funders
A Gathering on Boston Common
July 13-14, 2010
This historic site for American social movements provides the perfect backdrop for exploring social justice reform
efforts combining congregation-based and neighborhood organizations for greater results. We’ll examine how faith
community and non-faith organizations are working together in campaigns emerging in the current economic climate
and rooted in Massachusetts realities – with potential for national significance.
Join us for a conversation that will include local “place-based” and national “issue based” funders, as well as secular
and faith-based funders, to build an understanding of our differing perspectives and approaches. How we can work
together more closely to connect local work and nationally-funded organizing campaigns, increasing our impact?
In these challenging times, it’s all the more important for national and local funders to think holistically about
developing state level movements or infrastructures for longer term, larger impacts. Our panel of peers will lead us in
a conversation to consider how our different approaches (place-based or issue-based) can build synergy rather than
fragmentation. We’ll share some successful models and surface challenges to address. Your input will be very
valuable for rich and thoughtful discussion.
The meeting will include in-depth exploration of two themes surfaced in our State of the Field 2010 analysis of
current trends in congregation-based organizing, and your input will help us craft our further study. These cases were
chosen for their significance in Massachusetts, and relevance to other communities, campaigns and issues:
• How the successful justice campaign to remove systemic housing and job barriers for ex-offenders has built
alliances uniting a diverse array of secular and religious groups from the local level to statewide.
• How Boston congregation-based organizations are on the cutting edge in the movements to reform banking
practices, showing how local organizations are working within national networks for large-scale systemic
change while making changes at the neighborhood levels
What to expect when Interfaith Funders meets on the Common? An Interfaith Funders gathering is an opportunity
for sharing and learning with your colleagues from across the nation. More intimate than a conventional conference,
there will be ample time for conversation and to intentionally build relationships as well as share ideas that strengthen
us as grantmakers.
We hope that you will join us for a Gathering on the Boston Common!
