• To equip and encourage denominational leadership teams in the task of deepening the institutional and
congregational capacities of their faith traditions

• To strengthen clergy and lay leadership for congregational ministry
• To deepen denominational engagement in congregation-based community organizing
• To envision, shape, and strategize the direction of the IOI for the next two years
• To deepen relationships among those engaged in the IOI
Who: Teams from approximately ten religious bodies/denominations, totaling about fifty participants including
current IOI representatives.
What: This two day training and meeting will include 1) training on Power including internal leadership power
analysis; 2) training on Self-Interest including institutional self-interest; 3) one-one relational meetings; 4)
opportunities for denominational leadership teams to develop strategies for engaging their religious bodies more
powerfully in public life; 5) facilitated discussion to envision, shape, and strategize the direction of the IOI.
When and Where: The December 12-13 meeting will begin and end to allow travel with one overnight. The
meeting will be at the American Baptist College, located a half hour from Nashville International Airport (BNA).

2007. Participation is by teams, not individuals, and you will be asked to identify your team when you register.
Expense: The registration fee will be $50/person, which we would prefer to be a collective payment for your team.
This registration goes toward meeting expenses, including two lunches and dinner but does not include travel or
lodging costs. We have arranged group rates at moderately priced, quality hotels nearby. But we don't want any
team or anyone to not attend due to cost -- if the cost is a problem please contact Kathy about travel underwriting.
How to build a team: Participating and interested IOI representatives will recruit up to four others from their
denominations/religious bodies to participate, inviting those with power who can move the agenda of congregation-
based community organizing (CBCO) within their denomination, whether they be elected leadership, national staff,
CBCO practitioners or other key persons. Professional trainers will be invited from the national organizing
networks by the IOI Planning Team, with an eye on diversity.
